During second quarter, fifth grade used their understanding of area of rectangles to prove the formulas for other shapes. By really understanding and proving the formulas, rather than just memorizing them, students will have a conceptual knowledge that will allow them to manipulate shapes so that area becomes more about problem solving than about memorization.
